AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION National Weather Service Eureka CA 316 PM PDT Mon Apr 22 2024

SYNOPSIS
Showers and thunderstorms are forecast for the interior on Tuesday, mostly in Trinity county. High temperatures will trend down Tuesday and Wednesday. Drastically cooler interior temperatures, a chance for rain and high mountain snow will return Thursday through Friday.

DISCUSSION
Visible satellite imagery showed stratus and possible fog charging northward from Central California toward the Mendocino coast. As of 2 PM, stratus already reached the Mendo/Sonoma border and was whipping around Pt Arena. Expect stratus and perhaps fog to cover coastal portions of Mendocino and SW Humboldt this evening and overnight. Marine layer is forecast to deepen overnight with low clouds pushing into the interior by daybreak Tue as a cyclonic circulation (evident at 925mb) develops south of Pt Arena.

A semi-closed low in the southern branch of a splitting 500mb trough will spread higher PWATS (200% of normal or close to 1 inch) into the area from SW tonight and Tue. This deeper layer of available moisture coupled with daytime heating will result in an increase of instability and buoyant energy. Greatest instability and high

CAPE

will be mostly over Trinity County where scattered thunderstorm are expected to develop Tue afternoon. Isolated thunderstorms are possible (20%) for eastern-northeast fringes of Humboldt, NE Mendo and far northern Lake too, but the signal for convection is not as pronounced. Locally heavy downpours, perhaps some hail and gusty outflow winds are par for the course. Storms will put a damper on outdoor activities if right under the core of a downpour or worse lightning strikes. For now will continue to highlight the thunderstorm risk in a weather story graphic and social media posts.

Marine air intrusion into the interior valleys, mostly Mendocino, Lake and Humboldt will result in significant cooling on Tue/Wed.
As much as a 10-15F drop in max temperatures (compared to forecast highs today) are expected due solely from marine air and southerlies.
Temperatures are forecast to drop more drastically toward the end of the week as a colder 500mb trough drops down from the NW bringing clouds, precipitation chances and breezy NW winds.

Potential for precipitation will increase Thursday-Friday as a colder 500mb trough drops down from the NW. Highest precip chances look to occur late Thu into early Friday. Most of the precip (over 24 hours) is forecast to occur in the interior of Del Norte County (~1 inch) with the lowest in southern Mendocino and southern Lake where only a few hundredths or nothing may accumulate from 11 am Thu to 11 AM Fri. Temperatures will cool down below normal and freezing temperatures are probable in the high mountains. Once again, will highlight the precip potential in a weather story graphic and social media posts. Precipitation amounts are forecast to be light, but this time of year even light amounts will have impacts on outdoor plans or activities.

Considerable uncertainty arises for next weekend and early next week as another trough drops down from the NW and broad upper ridging builds offshore. Temperatures will most likely remain cool and below normal (60s to lower 70s), however precipitation probabilities are much more elusive and uncertain. Greatest chances will be north of Cape Mendocino with lower chances south.
Stay tuned. DB/ZVS

AVIATION
VFR conditions will almost certainly prevail through the day. This evening however, there is a 30 to 50% chance of at least inconsistent

IFR

conditions at coastal terminals. This is due to a surge of marine stratus currently creeping at around 15-20kts along the coast of Mendocino County. This surge is forecasted to round Cape Mendocino between 0400-0600Z with impacts at KCEC and KACV possibly starting around 0800Z and 1000Z, respectively. Impacts will include misty conditions lowering visibilities possibly >2SM and ceiling conditions of broken/overcast as low as 200-400ft possible.
These impacts will become more certain as more model guidance and satellite observations are available later this afternoon.

Inland at KUKI,

VFR

conditions are expected for the interior, however, a light south-southeasterly flow will bring a very slight chance (>20%) of a marine fog surge up to Ukiah early Tuesday morning along the Russian River valley. DS/JHW

MARINE
High pressure building across the interior today will help push the strongest northerly wind further offshore. Short period seas continue to weaken through the afternoon. By this afternoon, any remaining gale force gusts will be isolated to the far outer northern waters.

Northerly wind will turn mostly gentle to calm during the day Tuesday with high resolution models suggesting a southerly wind reversal in the inner waters. SOutherly wind gusts may reach around 20 kts early Tuesday morning near coastal headlands of Cape Mendocino and Pt Arena as this feature develops. A series of weak fronts will increase winds again Wednesday through late week, though winds look moderate at best with the strongest gusts up to 30 kts restricted just around Cape Mendocino. Short period wind waves will largely control the sea state through the week with a series of mid period northwest swells up to 5 feet being the only other feature of note.
