The 6 Living Room Decor Trends You'll See Everywhere in 2024 (2024)

The new year ushers in a sense of endless possibilities and a chance to start fresh—and that includes with your home decor. Why not update the central rooms of your home with a new paint color, piece of furniture, or a modern floor treatment?

These things might not change your life, but they will amp up your style.

To help in this endeavor, we’ve hit up the design pros for the hottest trends of 2024 for the living room.

Ready to dive in? Here are some of the things the experts say will define the year ahead.

1. Sage green

It’s time to push away the 50 shades of gray paint that have been dominating our main living spaces and embrace something with a little more oomph. For Susan Haywardof the eponymous design firm, that palette skews toward earth tones.

“Beautiful sage green and deep terra cottas are a refreshing change from the grays we were seeing in 2023,” she explains.

Ariel Barrionuevo, the designer at La Coralina Island House, agrees, adding that plush sofas are best showcased when draped in earth tones, particularly olive green and warm taupe.

2. Checkers

Think checks are old-fashioned or a little too country for most decor schemes? Jennifer Verruto, founder and CEO of Blythe Interiors, begs to differ, especially when they’re black and white.

“Checkers are here to stay in 2024 as the look is incredibly versatile and lends itself to both ultra transitional and elegant spaces, but also works well in funky, eclectic homes, too, ” she points out.

Try checks in your living room in a small way on a throw pillow or lampshade. Or go for a bigger statement by layering a checked rug underfoot or on top of a more neutral sisal floor covering.

3. Smaller spaces

If there was one practical thing to emerge from COVID-19-inspired home design, it was separate but cozy nooks. Of course, when it comes to new builds, the open floor plan—with living and dining rooms plus kitchen combined into one great room—will probably never leave us.

But within these large spaces, you can still try this hot trend by carving out a smaller area to sit, read, or work from home. For example, a desk can be placed in a corner with a folding screen for some privacy, or two chairs and a small table can be arranged at one end, resulting in a coffee spot for two.

4. Mixed styles

In an effort to go green and buy less in general, the trend of combining pieces from different decades is right on the money for 2024. So yes—go ahead and put an antique woven chair next to a chunky modern table in your living room corner.

“Mixing pieces from vastly different eras and styles should be done unapologetically, and it’s exactly what we’ll see more of in the new year,” says Verruto.

One example she likes is a Victorian table lamp in a modern living room. Or consider a vintage sofa with a sleek glass coffee table.

Lindsey Zborowski, a hospitality design manager at Wayfair Professional, calls this trend “creative play.”

“It’s about leaning into different materials, colors, and patterns for energizing a space—and it includes lots of nostalgia and era mixing,” she adds.

5. Wallpaper everywhere

It seems that wallpaper will never go out of style, whether you apply it on an accent wall in your living room, in a half-bath, or even on the ceiling of your dining room.

Pamela O’Brien, principal designer at Pamela Hope Designs, confirms that love for every kind of paper is strong for 2024.

“I’m seeing continued interest in wallpaper, both in iconic, classic, and ornate designs, along with simple monochromatic patterns that feel hand-painted or sketched,” she reports.

O’Brien predicts she’ll be hanging paper for clients all over the house in the coming year, “and not just in the powder room—any room is fair game.”

6. Bugs (yes, insects!)

It might be hard to believe, but bugs are on the horizon in the new year, says Noel Fahden Briceño, vice president of merchandising at Charish.

“We’re predicting bug decor in a variety of mediums—not just in accessories—but in traditional wall hangings, tapestries, wallpaper, pillows, and even furniture upholstery,” she explains.

Try the look on your living room wall with a simple black-and-white drawing of a scarab beetle, or go for something a little more subtle, such as ladybugs printed on throw pillows or coasters.
